Battery explosion caused a fire at a South Korean factory-two magic weapons “fire blanket and fireproof cloak”
June 24, 2024
A large-scale fire at a South Korean factory was caused by the explosion of several lithium batteries, which has killed at least 22 people.
The fire broke out on Monday morning at the Aricell factory in Hwaseong City, about 45 kilometers (28 miles) south of the capital Seoul.
Local TV footage showed smoke and explosions as firefighters tried to put out the fire. Part of the roof had collapsed.
South Korea is a major producer of lithium batteries, which are used in many products from electric vehicles to laptops.
There were 100 workers working when the fire broke out, and another eight people were injured, two of them seriously.
Around 35,000 battery cells are stored on the second floor of the Aricell factory, where they are inspected and packaged, and other battery cells are stored elsewhere.
Mr. Kim said the fire was caused by a series of battery cell explosions, but it was not clear what caused the initial explosion.
He explained that it was initially difficult to access the site “for fear of more explosions.”
It is not clear what caused the fire. Lithium batteries are at risk of explosion if they are damaged or overheated.
Kim Jae-ho, a professor of firefighting and disaster prevention at Daejeon University, said that whatever the cause, once a fire starts, it will spread rapidly, leaving workers with little time to escape.
He told Reuters: “Battery materials such as nickel are flammable. Compared with fires caused by other materials, there is usually not enough time to react.”
Because lithium fires react violently with water, firefighters had to use dry sand to put out the fire, which took several hours to control.
However, there is still a risk that after the fire is extinguished, it may reignite without warning due to chemical reactions.
Therefore, when the fire is too big, what we have to do is to protect ourselves and escape from the fire smoothly. Fireproof cloaks are the best magic weapon to prevent flames from harming people’s bodies.
However, where the fire occurs, we can use fire blankets to isolate the fire from the air.
